No "Fred" in your call
Fireflies' bot is named Fred by default. It joins meetings via calendar integration and shows up as a visible participant. Fine for internal meetings where everyone's opted in via their employer. Less fine for customer calls, external partner meetings, or two-party-consent states where showing up with an AI bot creates real legal exposure. AI Assist captures the meeting from your browser tab — no additional participant, nothing for other attendees to consent to.
Bring your own OpenAI + Anthropic keys

Audio never leaves your machine
Fireflies transcribes on their servers using their vendor accounts. AI Assist's local helper streams audio directly to OpenAI's Whisper endpoint via your key — the transcript is written to a SQLCipher-encrypted SQLite DB on your laptop. Full data flow diagrammed on the architecture page.

Fireflies Business is $19/user/month. That's $228 per year per seat. CRM + Slack integrations
Fireflies pushes meeting summaries into Salesforce and HubSpot deal records, posts action items into Slack channels, and syncs to Notion pages. If your sales or CS org depends on those workflows, AI Assist doesn't replace them — it's a single-user tool right now, not a team platform.
Webex support + mobile apps
Fireflies works in Meet, Zoom, Teams, and Webex. AI Assist supports Meet + Zoom Web today; Teams Web is coming soon and Webex isn't planned. And Fireflies has iOS + Android apps; AI Assist is desktop-only by design.
Compliance attestations
Fireflies has SOC 2 Type II, GDPR compliance statement, HIPAA BAA available. AI Assist doesn't. If procurement flags "no SOC 2 = no deal", Fireflies is the right choice today; AI Assist offers an architecture-level writeup at /security instead. For technical buyers the architecture page is often more informative than a badge; for procurement teams that need a checkbox, the badge wins.
Mobile
Fireflies has iOS and Android apps. AI Assist is desktop-only — that's a deliberate design choice (transcription runs on your machine), but it does mean you can't capture a phone-only meeting.
How to migrate from Fireflies
- Export your Fireflies data. Fireflies → Settings → Data export → download the archive. Keep it as a backup.
- Pause or cancel your Fireflies subscription.
- Get an OpenAI + Anthropic API key. Both free to create; you'll pre-load a small balance. See the BYOK walkthrough.
- Install AI Assist. Download the macOS or Linux helper + the Chrome extension. Paste both API keys in the extension Options.
- Remove Fireflies' calendar integration so Fred stops appearing in meetings you're no longer paying to record.
